Who can volunteer?

Just about anybody who would love to give the gift of reading to a child.

There are only four requirements:

  • First and most important, love children this age.

  • Have infinite patience with these kids.

  • Make the hard commitment to your coaching days.

  • Pass the police background check, TB test, and attend Kamalii's child safety class. (we'll make it as easy as possible to do these...read on)

Note that no degrees or certifications are required.

So, for example, are you:

  • A grandpa or grandma with no grandkids on island? What a way to have time with a kiddo!

  • A high-school student with a community service requirement? College application advantage?

  • A UH Maui student thinking of teaching?

  • A parent or guardian who would like to have this kind of skill?

  • Retired and looking for a way to give back that brings incredible satisfaction and sense of accomplishment?

Here's how to get your background check, courtesy of our sponsor Rotary (Rotary requires this document for all of its volunteers who work with kids and so they offered this convenient way to "piggyback" onto their established procedure):

Online:  Go to www. rotaryd5000.org  Now navigate to youth programs and the link to background check. Complete the form as directed.

Paper form via Kit Hawkins:  Email me at imuareader@gmail.com.  I will email you back with the Rotary Youth Programs Volunteer Affidavit as an attachment. Print out the form, fill it out, and then either:

Mail your completed affidavit to Joanne Laird of Rotary as directed, or

Scan and email your affidavit to Joanne laird as directed.

Note the $10 fee for either method of submitting your affidavit. We will reimburse you upon request.

Here's how to get your TB test:

Kihei-Wailea Medical Clinic offers the test Monday,Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 to 11:30AM and from 2 to 4PM, but depending on nurse availability. It is best to call ahead to be sure, at 874-8100.  K-W Medical Clinic is located in the Safeway shopping complex off of Piikea street, makai of Safeway. This test is a two stage process, the test and then the report. If K-W Clinic does not accept your medical insurance plan, they will charge $21.24, which we will reimburse on request.

The State Health Department offers free TB testing at their location, 121 Mahalani, off of W. Kaahumanu, across from Baldwin High School and just below Maui Memorial Medical Center. They do TB testing on Tuesday and Thursday, from 2 to 4PM.  No appointment necessary. Bring photo ID. And again, it's a two step process.
