YOUR TRAINING

Yes, you will need training to coach these kids.

Three days of it, in fact. Wev'e scheduled training for Wednesday October 15 through Friday October 17, all day, at Kamalii school. We'll let you know exact time of day and other specifics closer to the time.

But three whole days...really necessary?

An emphatic yes. You'll learn to coach only those elements of reading for the indergarten-first grade level. You'll learn some tools for assessing exactly where you need to begin with the child selected for you, and about techniques proven to be highly effective with these kids. And all of this does take three days.

In fact our training package has been developed especially for this program by Sue Voit, the expert who trained me. Sue will do our training in October and are we lucky. Sue is among the leading experts in Hawaii for remediating reading difficulty. She has consulted and practiced extensively in the school system. Her rather impressive bio appears below.

Sue will teach us elements of the Orton-Gillingham approach for remediation of reading difficulty. For further details about O-G, go to ortonacadamy.org.  In brief, O-G is intensive multi-sensory phonics, focused on the particular needs of each individual. Originally developed eighty years ago, current neuroscience has confirmed the efficacy of the O-G method for improving the brain's pathways to reading.

You'll be provided with all of the materials you'll use in the training and later for your actual coaching sessions. You won't need to "create" your session plans; all will be furnished.

And during the school year, we'll be there to support you...visitations, feedback and so on.
